Ayodhya Links Ayutthaya

The vast area was formerly a swamp, but the land was raised to create a difference in elevation, and groundwater was pumped up to create rivers and ponds. Only 18 holes were built on a 36-hole site, and each hole is independent, so each hole has a different feel. The course is very long at 7,600 yards, and involves water hazards such as rivers and ponds, as well as many bunkers, making it very strategic. The greens are shaped boldly, making putting difficult. There are no helicopters over the bunkers, and no man-made objects other than the clubhouse can be seen from the course.

Course Introduction

  • AyodhyaLinks

A long middle course with a dogleg to the left. The tee shot goes over a pond, and if you bend it too far to the left, it will be caught in the pond. There are also bunkers on both sides between 250 and 270 yards. The green is surrounded by three bunkers, and there is a pond on the right and back of the green. The green is long and diagonal, sloping from the back left to the front right.

A long, dogleg-to-the-left course. There are ponds on both sides of the green from the tee shot, with the pond on the right creating visual pressure, but the fairway is relatively wide. At the second shot, the fairway narrows and the ponds on both sides are close, making the landing area narrow. 60 yards from the green, the hole turns left at a right angle, so the third shot must go over the pond. The green is a long, two-tiered green with a strong vertical difference. The left side of the green faces the pond, and there are trees behind the green.

A long, almost straight middle shot. The left pond and three fairway bunkers on both sides come into play. The green has bunkers on both sides, and is a long, two-tiered green with strong backlash on the front and bottom tiers.

A slight dogleg uphill to the left. On the tee shot, there is one bunker on the left and three on the right, limiting the landing spot. Furthermore, there is a water hazard as well as a bush on the left. The green is long and narrow, with a mound in the center and sloping down to the far right.

  • AyodhyaLinks

A short shot over three bunkers. A long, narrow green of 43 yards with little depth. A ridge runs down the center of the green, sloping down from the center on both sides.

A long, dogleg to the left. The landing spot for the tee shot is limited by the fairway bunkers on both sides. For the second shot, you must decide whether to go over the creek or to cut it in front. If the second shot is over the creek, the pond on the right and the bunker on the left come into play. The green is two-tiered with a strong difference in level, with the left being higher and sloping sharply down to the front right. The large guard bunker on the left of the green is exquisitely placed, and if the pin position is at the far left, you will have to go over this bunker. Therefore, even if you hit the green with your third shot, there is a risk that the ball will roll to the back due to the lack of depth, making it even more difficult.

A long, tough, slight dogleg to the left with a pond on the left. There is a large mound in the middle of the fairway, which splits the fairway into left and right, with a long beach bunker and pond on the left, and a fairway bunker 270 yards away on the right. Long hitters need to be careful. Not only this bunker, but the pond on the left cuts into the ball the further you fly, so the landing area becomes narrower. For the second shot, you have to go over the pond, and a large bunker guarding the right side of the green comes into play. The green is long and narrow, with a ridge running down the center and sloping down on both sides. Even if you make par, if you land on the wrong surface, it will be difficult to putt.

A short shot with a beautiful island green. The green is guarded by a pond as well as bunkers. The green is long and narrow, about 40 yards wide, with a concave center, making it a three-sided green. Putting from different sides of this green is also difficult.

A long shot with a slight dogleg to the right. There is a pond 240 yards away, so long hitters cannot use a driver. To get over the pond, you need to carry the ball 290 yards, but John Deely apparently did it easily when he played here before. Generally, the second shot is hit onto the fairway that slopes to the right and is sandwiched between water hazards. The third shot is over a creek. It is a two-tiered green with a steep step, and the front part slopes down sharply, so if you don't reach the green surface, you will fall down into the creek.

A slight dogleg to the left. There is a water hazard to the left of the green and a fairway bunker nearly 200 yards long to the right, but the fairway is wide, so this is a course where you want to gain distance with a driver. The second shot is particularly difficult. The green is vertically elevated, and if you hit it short, two large bunkers will be waiting with their mouths open, and if the ball lands on the green, it will roll all the way to the back without any spin. The green has a ridge running down the center, and slopes down to the right at the front and back.

It's a long dogleg to the right, and the green swings left from 50 yards in front. The tee shot from the elevated tee requires caution against ponds on both sides and the three fairway bunkers on both sides. The pond on the left comes into play on the second, and the third requires you to go over a creek. The green is two-tiered with a steep difference in level, and there is a mound at the front that will roll down into the creek if you cannot get over it. The right side of the green is guarded by a large, deep bunker.

A very long middle course with a pond on the right side. The fairway is wide for the tee shot, so you can hit with all your might. For long hitters, the two fairway bunkers on the left and the large beach bunker on the right come into play. For those trying to make a deep second shot, the fairway is narrow and the pond closes in from the right, limiting the places you can land the ball. The pond immediately runs into the right side of the green, which is two-tiered, with the back tier sloping steeply towards the pond on the right.

Trivia

50 minutes by car from central Bangkok. You cannot play unless accompanied by a member all day. There are currently 250 members, and it is one of the most difficult golf courses in Asia to become a member of, as it is only by invitation from the golf course. The owner has a farm nearby, and organic vegetables are served in the restaurant.

The parking lot for members has a roof, and the distance to the clubhouse is about 10 meters along the roof, so even in rainy weather, you can walk from your car to the clubhouse without getting wet. The management attitude for the benefit of members is wonderful. The caddies are called butlers and are well trained.

It was ranked 76th in Golf Magazine's 2015 World's Best 100. It is the first golf course in an ASEAN country to be included in the World's Best 100. There are six courses in Asia that are ranked in the top 100, including Hirono GC (42nd), Kawana Fuji Course (68th), Tokyo GC (96th) in Japan, Nine Bridges (43rd) in Korea, and Shang Ching Bay (47th) in China. In addition, it was ranked 1st out of the top 40 courses in Thailand in 2015 by the Top 100 Golf Courses of the World (top100golfcourses.co.uk). As of 2015, there are approximately 270 golf courses in Thailand.
