カタトーン ゴルフ リゾート & スパ

Katathong Golf Resort & Spa Phuket and Koh Samui

This is a hilly course located in the deep mountain valley of a former tin mine. The course name Kataton means "golden valley" and the course is surrounded by mountains. The site is full of ups and downs, and ponds and bunkers are scattered throughout, making use of the natural elevation difference with ups and downs. The fairway is relatively narrow, and there are large and small ponds, streams, palm trees, and bunkers on both sides of the holes and greens, so this course requires precise course strategy and accuracy. There are more impressive holes on the inside than on the outside. All four par 3s have a large difference in elevation, but they are fun to play. The last two holes are quite difficult. The green is almost flat, with some subtle undulations. The mountain scenery can be seen from all points on the course, and the view of the holes and the mountains behind them from the tee on the 3rd and 16th holes is particularly good. The course as seen from the clubhouse is spectacular and the waterfalls on the course are beautiful. The greens are in good condition, and both the fairway and the rough are well maintained.

Course Introduction

It curves left and then goes straight for a long shot. From the tee to the green, there are hazards on the left and palm trees on the right. The green is slightly elevated and guarded by two bunkers.

A dogleg to the left. On the tee shot, a small stream runs to the left, and the further the shot flies, the narrower the fairway becomes. The green is long and gently shaped in two levels, and is guarded by four bunkers.

A beautiful short shot downhill over a pond. There is a bunker on the right side of the green, which slopes slightly to the right.

A famous hole, this is a short shot onto a beautiful island green. It is a strong downhill shot, and you have to carry the pond for 200 yards, and the green is only 35 yards deep, so you need to choose the right club taking into account the downhill shot and the wind. There are ponds on both sides of the green, so it goes without saying that accuracy is required.

A long and tough dogleg to the left. The tee shot is downhill over a pond, and on the second shot you must decide whether to cut it in front of the clean or go over it. The green slopes sharply to the left and is guarded by two bunkers.

A long par 4 with a slight dogleg to the left. On the tee shot, a stream runs on the left and a palm grove on the right. The green is vertically elevated with two bunkers in front and bushes on both sides.

A short shot with a strong uphill shot over a pond. It is a 50-yard uphill shot over a cliff, and if you don't hit the green directly, your ball will be sucked into the deep rough that is almost vertical. There are many short shots with downhill shots over ponds, but you will rarely come across a short shot with such a steep uphill shot, even if you play all over the world.

A difficult hole that is straight for long hitters and a dogleg to the left for average hitters. The tee shot is downhill, and a carry of 200 to 240 yards is required to get over the pond. If you hit safely to the right side, you will have distance left on the second shot and will not be able to make par. Even if you choose a straight route and are able to get over the pond, there is a hazard on the left side, a forest and deep rough on the right side, and the fairway is tight, so both distance and accuracy are required. The second shot is uphill, and the green is a long, two-tiered shape, guarded by bushes and cliffs on the left side and a bunker in front of the left.

Trivia

1 hour and 20 minutes northeast from Phuket Airport. The hotel has a great view and a jacuzzi on the balcony. I stayed there the day before playing. The view from the balcony is spectacular. It's a public course, and the hotel and clubhouse are in the same building.
The designer, Wiwatchai Prangpitak, is a local Thai.
